Piazza Grande during the Locarno Festival

The Festival's heart is surely the daily evening projection in the magnificent Piazza Grande, which transforms itself into the "most beautiful movie-theater under the stars".

Black Light was the title of the Retrospective of Locarno72, an overview of international black cinema of the twentieth century, but beyond the already known borders of "black cinema", beyond those assumptions that tell only one black cinema among many. An overall geographical retrospective that touches on countries such as Europe, North America, the Caribbean and South America, but not only, and that calls to itself the directors who have reinterpreted the issue by going beyond the idea of "black" as an identity or social problem. 47 films, 47 different shades of black cinema, from cult authors, to Race movies of the '20s and '30s, to Blaxploitation films of the '70s, to pioneering masterpieces and rare pearls, through direction and faces known, but also less known: Spike Lee, Zózimo Bulbul, Sidney Poitier, Ousmane Sembene, Med Hondo, Pier Paolo Pasolini. The first appointment is with Do the Right Thing by Spike Lee was the first appointment in Piazza Grande, on the occasion of the pre-festival evening offered by Ascona-Locarno.
