The Fortress of Bellinzona

Bellinzona

“The fortified complex of Bellinzona is an extraordinary example of a late medieval defence structure located at a key strategic point in the Alpine landscape. The Bellinzona castles are some of the most enchanting examples of fortified medieval architecture of the Alps.”

This was the description of the three Bellinzona castles with the curtain wall and defensive wall provided on 30 November 2000 when they were listed as a prestigious UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Castel Grande, Montebello and Sasso Corbaro were built to control traffic from the Ticino River valley, access to Alpine passes and trade routes from and to San Gottardo.

After recent reconstructions, restorations and improvements, today they can be seen in all of their splendour and are the city’s main tourist attraction.

Discover all they have to offer and learn about a key part of the long and rich history of humanity!
