In 2017, three years after the opening of the Museum Castello San Materno, the collection of the Kurt and Barbara Alten Foundation for Culture was enriched with 21 works that were added to the 47 already present since 2014, most of which are on permanent display. All the works in the collection have thus been definitively brought together. The collection - as well as taking into account the major artistic movements that marked the history of German art between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the Second World War - was established according to the personal taste of the Alten spouses in the name of harmony. Among the iconographic themes of the collection there is in fact a preference for floral subjects, particularly loved by Kurt and Barbara Alten as well as landscapes. The exhibition in the room of the former chapel dedicated to St. Maternus presents a selection of these works by Emil Nolde (1867-1956), Karl Schmidt-Rottluff (1884-1976), Gabriele Münter (1877-1962) and Klaus Fußmann (1938).
