From Locarno via Tenero to the other shore of the lake. Following the lake shore, passing through the charming villages of Gambarogno, you arrive at Dirinella, the border with Italy. The road is quite flat until Luino, where the famous market is held on Wednesdays. From km 39, there are some short climbs and sections away from the lake. In Laveno, there is the possibility to take the ferry to Intra and shorten the route. Sesto Calende is located at the end of Lake Maggiore. Here you cross the lake and begin the return journey. On this side, you also pass beautiful villages such as Arona, Stresa, and Verbania, where it is worth making a short stop. In Cannobio, there is also a very popular weekly market, which is always held on Sundays. In Brissago, cross the Swiss border again. Continue to Ascona and finally return to Locarno.
Author’s recommendation
Since the roads along the lake are crowded with commuter traffic during peak hours, it is recommended to avoid these times. It is also advisable to carry an identity document, as part of the route passes through Italy.
