We are in a bourgeois drawing room; two pairs of parents meet to resolve a matter that appears, all things considered, to be a trifle:
a quarrel that has broken out between their children. But from the very first bars, the civilised, polite, 'adult' appearance crumbles, as if gnawed by the sharp teeth of a hamster.
