Philippe is the director of a post office in Provence. Obliged to be transferred, he tries to get himself sent to the Côte d'Azur and, to get the assignment, he stages a trick that is discovered. At this point he could fear dismissal. Instead, worse happens to him. He is assigned to the Bergues post office in Nord-Pas de Calais. There is no one there who does not pity him. His wife, however, who fell into depression at the news, does not follow him.

When he arrives at his destination, everything seems as it was told. The locals speak an almost incomprehensible dialect, the food is unattractive and the flat where he is supposed to live is unfurnished. But soon things change.
