Paris, 1960. Jean-Louis Jobert leads his flat life as a financial expert with his wife Suzanne. In the squalid attic of the house lives a group of Spanish women who are often mistreated by the concierge. Jean-Louis does not care for them until the old housekeeper quits because of disagreements with Suzanne.

The niece of one of the Iberian women, Maria, is hired. Jean-Louis begins to take an interest in her and her compatriots' lives. He begins to help them with their daily difficulties.

His wife notices the change in her husband, but becomes convinced that he has a well-known heiress as a mistress and decides to go on the counter-attack.
