Festa dei popoli

On Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 September, thanks to the third edition of the Festa dei popoli, the Piazza Grande in Locarno will be filled with colours, dances, sounds and flavours, transporting adults and children on a fantastic journey around the world.

And this year's journey of multicultural discovery will start from Puglia, thanks to the exceptional presence of the Orchestra Popolare della Notte della Taranta, which will perform for the first time in Ticino on Saturday 21 September, bringing the contagious vibrations of pizzica and the popular culture of Salento to the splendid setting of Piazza Grande. Programme:

5:00 pm, Piazza Remo Rossi (Piazzale PalaCinema): pizzica workshops to learn the steps of the Salento dance par excellence alongside the talented dance troupe of the Notte della Taranta

8:30 pm, Piazza Grande: pre-concert with the Ticino singer-songwriter Diamante accompanied by the spectacular fire dances of the Locarno artist Brenno.

9:00 p.m., Piazza Grande: Concert by the Notte della Taranta Popular Orchestra, with the dance troupe formed by Stefano Campagna, Mihaela Coluccia, Fabrizio Nigro, Serena Pellegrino, Mattia Politi and Lucia Scarabino, accompanied by the voices of Consuelo Alfieri, Antonio Amato, Salvatore Galeanda and Giancarlo Pagliuca and the sounds of Giuseppe Astore (violin), Nico Berardi (wind instruments), Roberto Chiga (tambourine), Mario Esposito (bass), Roberto Gemma (accordion), Peppo Grassi (mandolin), Gianluca Longo (mandola), Antonio Marra (drums) and Attilio Turrisi (battente guitar).

In addition to this, in Piazza Grande from 5:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. there will be food stations with typical Apulian products, to savor the magic of Salento also with the palate.

On Sunday 22nd September, starting at 11am and ending at 7:30pm, the journey of discovery and cultural exchange will expand to over thirty towns, thanks to the many food, craft and information stalls and to shows, workshops and many other activities for all ages, which will liven up Piazza Grande, giving life to the classic multi-ethnic day of the Festa dei Popoli, which this year takes place under the slogan “towards a bigger us”. An opportunity to meet, exchange and discover the cultural diversity of our region made possible thanks to the collaboration with around fifty institutions, associations and communities whose activities allow the City to celebrate diversity and promote integration, respect and coexistence.

In case of severe weather, the events on Saturday and Sunday will be moved to PalExpo (FEVI).

The event is organized by the City of Locarno with the support of the Cantonal Integration Program (PIC 3) of the Department of Institutions of the Canton of Ticino and is made possible thanks to the close collaboration with the Gastro & Commercio Locarno Association and the Cantonal Hospital Authority, thanks to the valuable financial contribution of some sponsors, including Fondazione Cultura nel Locarnese, Tognetti Auto, Prime Drinks and Podere Don Cataldo, Società Elettrica Sopracenerina and a generous fundraiser on the eroilocali.ch platform of Raiffeisen, as well as thanks to the media collaboration with Radio Ticino, which will also guarantee the presentations on stage in a professional manner, and the technical collaboration with EMME and InElettra. In addition to these, there is the invaluable contribution of various associations and volunteers who have made themselves available for the organization of the event.
