Christian Poggioni – Italy
"The Holy Jester, Francis"
By Dario Fo and Franca Rame
With Christian Poggioni

A monologue by Dario Fo and Franca Rame dedicated to Saint Francis, a figure universally recognized—and not only by Christians—as a bearer of peace, dialogue between cultures and religions, and harmony between man and nature. The show interweaves historical sources on the saint's life with popular traditions, legends, and sermons: the wolf of Gubbio, the sermon to the birds, the meeting with Pope Innocent III, the composition of the Canticle of the Creatures, and other memorable episodes. The result is a playful, lighthearted, and spiritual—and at the same time profoundly human—portrait of the Poverello of Assisi, the man who called himself "God's jester."
