The Locarno Film Festival's Spring Academy, the annual spring event that involves young female directors from all over the world in a nine-day workshop (Feb. 23-March 3) dedicated to the development and production of art-house short films, is back. Following Béla Tarr, Michelangelo Frammartino, Radu Jude and Alice Diop, the mentors for this year's edition will be Caroline Poggi and Jonathan Vinel.
The Spring Academy will be inaugurated on Sunday, February 23 at Rialto il Cinema di Locarno-Muralto starting at 5 p.m. with an aperitif open to the public, which will be followed at 6 p.m. by the screening of 'Eat the Night', introduced by program curator Daniela Persico (member of the Locarno Film Festival selection committee) together with Stefano Knuchel (Director of Locarno Factory), Marco Poloni (director of CISA), and directors Caroline Poggi and Jonathan Vinel, who will be present in the auditorium. Shown at the Cannes Film Festival's Fortnight of Cinéastes in 2024, the film elaborates on the relationship between young drug dealer Pablo and his younger sister, Apolline, who has grown up in the utopia of a virtual world on the verge of being disrupted by its creator. While waiting for the last night, a boy, Night, enters their daily life, wreaking havoc on the sibling relationship, but also opening up new perspectives. A film about the contemporary perception of the reality of feelings, steeped in love, dismay and nostalgia.
