Panoramic view from CasonePhoto: Ascona-Locarno Tourism
Short but intense climb above Lake Maggiore. Ideal for a quick workout or a short road bike ride.
A short but intense route, with an average gradient of 8.6% and a maximum of 16%. From the lakeside promenade of Ascona, the route begins to climb steeply towards Monte Verità. The ascent is still very gentle up to the core of Gruppaldo, from where the climb is steady. The road winds along the slopes above Lake Maggiore and up to Porera you benefit mainly from the shade, particularly pleasant in the summer months. Over the 8.75 km from Gruppaldo to Casone, you have to work hard to overcome the 902 meters of elevation. From Casone there is a wonderful panoramic view over Lake Maggiore down to Italy. Along the route are two grotti where you can stop to refresh yourself (check the opening times).
- Average gradient: 8.6 %
- Ascent from Gruppaldo: 8.75 km
- Elevation gain from Gruppaldo: +902 m
Author’s recommendation
Casone is located at 1306 meters above sea level, so it is important to check the weather conditions in advance. Proper equipment and warm clothing are also necessary for the descent.
