From Vira Gambarogno, the tour begins with a very long and steep climb to Alpe di Neggia. On the winding 12 kilometres, the gradient is rarely less than 8% and even reaches 22%. However, the varied landscape quickly brings you forward and when you reach the Alpe di Neggia you have reached the highest point of the tour (1,400 m a. s. l.). A beautiful alp with a fantastic panorama over Lake Maggiore and the region.

The descent begins to Indemini, a secluded village that is also described as a living museum. Shortly after, we cross the border into Italy. Through the wild and lonely Val Veddasca and its characteristic settlements with typical stone houses, the route returns to the lake.

After 37 km you have reached Maccagno. From here, good rouleur skills are required. Along the lake, the route returns to Switzerland via Dirinella. Past the charming villages of Gambarogno to the starting point of Vira Gambarogno.

    Author’s recommendation

Alpe di Neggia is at 1396 m a. s. l., so it is important to check the weather conditions in advance. In addition, appropriate equipment and warm clothing are required for the descent. As the roads are busy with commuting traffic during rush hours, we advise you to avoid these times. Bring an ID with you, as part of the tour goes through Italy.
