From Vira Gambarogno, the route begins with a very long and steep climb towards Alpe di Neggia. On the 12 km of curves, the gradient is rarely below 8% and can reach up to 22%. However, the variety of the landscape quickly moves us forward, and when reaching Alpe di Neggia, the highest point of the route (1,400 meters above sea level) is reached. A beautiful alpine pasture with a fantastic view over Lake Maggiore and the region.
The descent starts at Indemini, an isolated village also described as a living museum. Shortly after, the route crosses the border into Italy. Through the wild and solitary Val Veddasca and its characteristic settlements with typical stone houses, the route returns to the lake.
After 37 km, Maccagno is reached. From here, strong rider skills are required. The route follows the lake passing through Dirinella and re-enters Switzerland. After passing the charming villages of Gambarogno, the starting point at Vira Gambarogno is reached.
Author’s recommendation
Alpe di Neggia is located at 1396 meters above sea level, so it is important to check the weather conditions in advance. For the descent, appropriate equipment and warm clothing are also necessary. Since during peak hours the roads along the lake are busy with commuter traffic, it is recommended to avoid these times. It is also advised to carry an identity document, as part of the route passes through Italy.
