From Vira Gambarogno, the pretty village on Lake Maggiore, the route climbs up to the Alpe di Neggia on 12 kilometres of road with little traffic. On the first six kilometres, the gradient is about 9% almost all the way. Between km 6 and 7, at the Monti Piazzogna, the gradient decreases slightly before the climb becomes really hard. There are now five kilometres with a gradient of 10-11% ahead of you. Hairpin bends lead up to the Alpe di Neggia, which lies at 1396 m a. s. l. Most of the route is in the shade, which is particularly pleasant in the summer months. From the Alpe di Neggia you have a wonderful panorama over the lake, Ascona, Locarno and far into the surrounding valleys.
