The Estonian nobleman Elisàr von Kupffer, also known by the pseudonym Elisarion, was a painter, poet, historian, and playwright. In 1891, he met Eduard von Mayer, born in St. Petersburg: the two became inseparable friends and life companions from 1897. After a long period in Florence, they settled in Muralto in 1915 and in 1925 purchased a plot of land on Via Simen in Minusio, where they built the Sanctuarium Artis Elisarion. In 1939, they added a circular building to house the painting "The Clear World of the Blessed," created between 1919 and 1929. In 1978, the painting was transferred to Monte Verità by Harald Szeemann and today, after a painstaking restoration, is part of the Monte Verità Museum Complex.
