The Flame Man is a weary, fragile, and depressed superhero: betrayed by the very system that elevated him to hero status and wrung him dry, he decides to quit his job. When he tells his wife and son of his decision, rather than worrying about him, they erupt into a thoroughly self-centred reaction that highlights dynamics of power and fear; their sole concern is the effect Flame Man’s retirement will have on them.
What is the point of being good? Flame Man has done everything to be good, to serve others, to be recognised and loved, yet after a lifetime spent looking after others, he discovers he has nothing left.
Through the use of sharp and powerful language, at times dramatic and at others comic, the play brings to the stage the narcissistic psychosis of a system that appears altruistic but is in fact deeply egocentric.
