From to

The Lake Maggiore stage is among the most demanding parts of Bernhard Hengl’s extraordinary swimming challenge and raises awareness of neurofibromatosis.

About the event

Bernhard Hengl continues his long-distance challenge The Alpine Seven with a crossing of Lake Maggiore. This stage is part of a project that raises awareness and donations for people with neurofibromatosis (NF).

Background

After successful lake crossings in Austria and Germany, Lake Maggiore marks one of the most demanding stages of the entire series. Hengl, former captain of the Austrian national water polo team, combines this sporting effort with a social cause under the motto “Illness is no taboo!”.

Highlights

  • Swimming challenge across seven major Alpine lakes covering more than 330 kilometres in total
  • Commitment in support of people with neurofibromatosis
  • Joint finish: regional swimming clubs were invited to swim the final 500 metres together with him
  • In 2025, Bernhard Hengl already completed crossings of Attersee, Lake Constance and Wörthersee
  • With the Lake Constance crossing, he made Austrian swimming history as the first Austrian and only the sixth person worldwide to complete the route nonstop without a wetsuit
