Explanation
Take the aerial cableway to the Robièi and its icy enjoyment. Information about the natural landscape is conveyed at eight locations by means of a brochure which can be purchased at the cableway station.
A short stretch on an asphalted road leads to the dam of Lake Zött. It's a steep climb through the mountains to the rocky promontory of the Pizzo Pecora: if you have a head for heights, you can stand on the cliff and peer into the Bavona valley. The terrain was covered with ice until a few years ago, which explains why it's so barren and few pioneer plants have colonised the rocky ground.
Head back downhill on the moraine, taking care as it can be slippery. Now the scenery changes and green meadows start appearing.
Food and accommodation are available at the Berghotel or Capanna Basòdino, while Vallemaggia cheese can be bought at the Caseificio alpine dairy. San Carlo is on a bus route: make a note of the timetable.
