A short stretch along a paved road leads to the Zött reservoir. The trail then climbs steeply through the alpine landscape to the rocky outcrop of Pizzo Pecora, where those with a head for heights can enjoy views down into Val Bavona. Until a few years ago, the landscape was still covered in ice, which explains its barren appearance and the few pioneer plants emerging from the rocky ground. The route then descends over the moraine, where some caution is required as the terrain can be slippery. The scenery gradually changes, giving way to lush green meadows.
You can stop for refreshments or stay overnight at the hotel or Capanna Basòdino, while Vallemaggia cheese can be purchased from the alpine dairy. San Carlo is served by bus (check the timetables in advance).
