The starting point for this short excursion to the Maia Forest Reserve is Losone. Located between Ascona and Locarno, it can be reached by car or bus. In Losone, above the hamlet of San Lorenzo, you leave civilisation behind and enter the forest. A good hiking trail leads through the Maia Forest Reserve in the direction of Ortighee and on to Ciossa. The reserve is a 100-hectare deciduous forest stretching between Losone and Arcegno, consisting mainly of oaks, ash trees, lime trees, cherry trees, alders, maples, birches and chestnuts. The reserve is one of the first protected parks in the canton of Ticino (1998) and is of national importance. At Ciossa you can make a detour to a small lake a little below. In the forest reserve there are also boards with exciting information and some raised hills where you can let your eyes wander into the distance. Back in Losone, the bus leaves.
