Situated on the hillside, Mergoscia is a village overlooking Lakes Vogorno and Maggiore and accessible by car or bus. The long ascent to the Alpe di Bietri takes you through a number of hamlets. The Valle di Mergoscia is a broad, open valley with not much woodland to walk through. The Alpe di Bietri is an alp on which cows are kept.

Hikers with experience of the mountains can make a detour to one of the neighbouring peaks, such as the Cima della Trosa (approx. 70 min.) or Madone (approx. 90 min.). The path passes through a delightful beech forest between the Alpe di Bietri and Bassa di Bietri. Beneath the Cimetta, you go down to Monti di Lego, which offers spectacular vistas over Lake Maggiore; meanwhile, the Capanna Monti di Lego refuge is on hand with food and accommodation if needed. Also in the vicinity are a small church and a little lake.

The descent continues via Al Passo on an easy path back to Mergoscia. Bus times should be noted in advance.
