Sonogno is accessible by car or bus (Locarno-Tenero-Sonogno line). You follow the Verzasca up to Cabiói (to Secada on paved road). Those wishing to stay overnight at the Capanna Barone can park in reserved spaces once they arrive at Cabiói, where the trail begins.
The trail ascends moderately until Corte di Fondo. You cross the wooden bridge and continue to Corte della Pianca. On the Alpe Vegornèss, which extends to Lake Barone, you may encounter grazing animals (cheese can be purchased at Corte di Piodoo or Sonogno). You walk along the rocky mountainside, then ascend to the Capanna Barone (open from June to October), which offers a fantastic view of the valley.
The Capanna Barone has 32 beds, toilet/shower, and cooking facilities. Drinks can be purchased. Those who wish can walk to the nearby Lake Barone (approx. 30 minutes). The next day you return to Sonogno (worth a visit!) on the same trail.
