The 50 km route to the medieval village of Bordei starts from Locarno. You follow the Maggia river, then the Melezza river to Tegna, where you turn left into the Terre di Pedemonte. Here the climate is very Mediterranean and the vegetation exotic. The Centovalli begin at Intragna. The area is more wild and bears witness to the poverty of the past. The road rises moderately through the valley up to the artificial lake of Palagnedra. After turning in the direction of Palagnedra and Bordei, the climb begins. The road climbs steeply along the hairpin bends to the characteristic village of Palagnedra, followed by a descent and a further climb to Bordei. In Bordei you find traditional stone houses built with a mix of different stones and colors, which make the village very lively. Surrounded by lush nature, there is an inn where you can relax with a cool drink or something tasty from the kitchen.

Author’s recommendation
For those who want to extend the route or are looking for ideas for further routes, it is also possible to tackle the climbs from Camedo to Moneto or Lionza. Since the roads are crowded with commuter traffic during peak hours, it is advisable to avoid these times.
