The 65 km route starts from Locarno. The first ten kilometers are ideal for warming up. From Cavigliano, the climb towards Valle Onsernone begins, which is very steep. The first two kilometers have a 9% gradient, but the following ten kilometers flatten out and rise gently at regular intervals. Only shortly before Loco is there a short but intense section to face. The lush nature of Valle Onsernone is unique, and the small villages clinging to the slopes are impressive. The road is very winding, with 300 curves up to Spruga! After Mosogno and Russo, you can also enjoy a short descent, which must be pedaled again on the way back. Immediately after the second descent, at Ponte Oscuro, turn right into the Vergeletto Valley. Some hairpin bends lead to Vergeletto, where you can continue through the village for about six kilometers to Casone (gradient of 4%). There is also a grotto here. Those wanting to extend the route can add the climb to Gresso or Spruga.
Average gradient: 3.6 %
Climb Cavigliano – Vergeletto (Casone): 22 km
Elevation difference Cavigliano – Vergeletto (Casone): +915 m/-115 m
Author’s recommendation
Vergeletto (Casone) is located at 1234 meters above sea level, so it is important to check the weather conditions in advance. For the descent, appropriate equipment and warm clothing are also necessary.
