Trail running Eldorado

Autumn is the perfect season to enjoy outdoor activities at Lake Maggiore. Here you can enjoy pleasant temperatures, sunny days and clear blue skies that elevate every view. Immerse yourself in colourful landscapes and savour delicious autumn scents after a day spent exploring nature’s wonders. Discover a perfect blend of active adventure and relaxation.

The Ascona-Locarno region boasts gently rolling hills, steep ascents and challenging terrain. The diverse landscape of lakes, lush forests and majestic mountains creates an ideal environment for trail running. Crystal-clear mountain lakes, roaring waterfalls, rugged rocks and breathtaking viewpoints turn every run into an experience for body and mind. Whether for short runs, long endurance sessions or technically challenging trails, trail runners will find the perfect routes here. Multi-day tours from hut to hut are particularly appealing in autumn, when fewer people are around and the landscape is painted in warm, vibrant colours. Most starting points lie at lower elevations, so every ascent rewards not only strength but also spectacular panoramic views. Thanks to the mild climate year-round, runners can enjoy their routes almost any time. The region provides challenges for experienced trail runners as well as less technical routes for beginners. Trail running here is more than just a sport: it’s an experience that is fun, sharpens the senses and replenishes energy – a perfect combination of adventure, performance and relaxation.

For both professional and recreational athletes, Ascona-Locarno is a true training paradise. World-class athletes such as Joey Hadorn use the region to prepare optimally for competitions.

  • Ascona Locarno Golden Trail Finals

  • The Ascona Locarno Golden Trail Finals took place from 17 to 20 October 2024 on Cardada, Locarno’s neighbouring mountain. Hosting the final of the Golden Trail World Series by Salomon was a great honour for the region and proved that the world’s trail running elite are also impressed by the excellent conditions and infrastructure here.

Joey Hadorn, an orienteering athlete from the Bernese Oberland, won the silver medal in the middle-distance event at the 2023 World Orienteering Championships and claimed gold in the 2023/2024 relay. Alongside his successful orienteering career, he has consistently pursued his passion for trail running, and as a result, he now competes at the very top of the Golden Trail World Series. For him, Lake Maggiore is the perfect training destination during the off-season, when the northern Alps are still, or already, under winter conditions. Even as a child, he spent a lot of time in Ticino with his family – always out and about with his bike and running shoes. It is therefore no coincidence that Joey has achieved such success in running and that Ascona-Locarno holds a special significance for him.
