Orienteering World Cup in Ascona-Locarno
  • Ascona-Locarno, a destination made for orienteering

  • Ascona-Locarno is tailor-made for orienteering: over 1,400 km of hiking trails, 2,300 hours of sunshine per year and a mild climate offer perfect conditions. The winding village lanes and diverse natural scenery make the region both varied and technically demanding terrain.

Although orienteering does not have as long a tradition in Ticino as it does in some Scandinavian countries, a dedicated community has existed here for many years. Several clubs across the canton offer regular training sessions and organise events of all sizes. It is therefore no surprise that major competitions are increasingly drawn to the Ascona-Locarno region. With its varied landscapes, dense forests and labyrinthine villages, the area is perfectly suited to the sport.

Athletes such as Joey Hadorn, one of Switzerland’s most successful competitors, and former elite orienteer Judith Wyder also benefit from the excellent training conditions and are frequently seen in the region.

  • Joey Hadorn – orienteering ambassador of the region

  • As a child, Joey spent his family holidays in Ascona-Locarno. Today, the multiple World Championship medallist takes advantage of the unique conditions between Lake Maggiore and the surrounding alpine terrain to prepare for international orienteering and trail running competitions.

During the World Cup weekend, more than 250 athletes from around 30 nations will gather in Ascona-Locarno – from the world’s elite to ambitious amateur runners. The event opens on Friday afternoon with the World Cup Sprint, where top speed and absolute precision are essential as international stars race through historic alleyways.

Saturday is all about excitement and team spirit. In the morning, the 5th National Middle Distance Race takes place, followed in the afternoon by the World Cup Sprint Relay, in which mixed-nation teams compete in a thrilling format demanding tactical skill and nerves of steel.

Sunday promises more highlights: in the morning, amateurs can test themselves in the 6th National Sprint. In the afternoon, the weekend concludes with the spectacular World Cup Knock-Out Sprint finale – mass starts, head-to-head duels and elimination rounds ensure suspense right to the finish. Both national races are open to anyone wishing to experience orienteering first-hand.

The event centre, with food and drink stalls, is located at Palexpo Locarno, just a few minutes’ walk from Piazza Grande.

Be there and experience top-level sport, emotion and Ticinese hospitality in a truly unique atmosphere.
