Through a friend from Ticino, he discovered Ascona-Locarno and was instantly captivated by the rugged landscape, the warm hospitality, the charming rustici, and of course, the food. “In German-speaking Switzerland, competitions often focus on the competitive spirit. Here, it’s just as much about flying together and enjoying each other’s company afterwards.” Patrick is now deeply rooted in the region, both professionally and personally. His wife grew up here and he has owned a holiday home in the Bavona Valley for several years, regularly spending time there with his family. In spring, the region is an insider tip for anyone who wants to get up high as there are snow-free mountain tours, strong thermals and ideal conditions for long cross-country flights. One of his favourites is a 260-kilometre FAI triangle starting at Morena, via Centovalli, Domodossola, Bavona Valley, Leventina to Bellinzona – a route that requires planning, patience and skill.
The fact that the Red Bull X-Alps 2025 includes a checkpoint at Cimetta is a highlight for Patrick: “I'm buzzing for it – it's going to be incredibly emotional! My family, friends and lots of familiar faces will be there.” His training camps take place either in the Ascona-Locarno region or, if necessary, in neighbouring Italy. In any case, the important thing is not to fly the route in advance but to show team spirit and flexibility. “Of course I want to do well, but the most important thing for me is the shared experience with my crew.”
