Patrick von Känel: Hike&Fly ambassador

Patrick von Känel is one of the very best Hike&Fly athletes in the world. The man from the Kander Valley in the Bernese Oberland has been an ambassador for the Ascona-Locarno region since 2025. He bears the logo of the sunny region loud and proud on his wing. He took to the air at a young age, embarking on his first flight at the age of 14 (albeit in an unofficial manner), before qualifying at 16. Today, the Red Bull athlete is a multiple X-Alps participant and has inspired others with his passion for flying.

  • Up in the sky but feet on the ground

  • Patrick is driven more by inspiring others than by podium finishes: “If my successful projects inspire people to dream, that’s the most important thing.”

Patrick was always sporty, firstly on skis and then paragliding. He was never particularly fond of fitness training, but that has all changed since he dedicated himself to Hike&Fly – even if running up a mountain quickly is not his thing. His flying career started under the guidance and influence of his parents, both keen paragliders. He was soon able to turn his hobby into his job, first as a test pilot for ADVANCE and then as an athlete in international competitions.

But he soon realised that simply flying was not enough. To maintain the joy and the tingling sensation before every flight, you need a balance. He found it in kitesurfing.
The switch from classic cross-country flying to Hike&Fly came almost automatically for Patrick. He loves competitions, new routes, acrobatic elements – and Hike&Fly combines all those elements. It is a challenge that he enjoys and that requires incredible flexibility.

  • Red Bull X-Alps

  • The world’s toughest adventure race in the world took place from 15 to 27 July 2025: Red Bull X-Alps. For the first time, there was a checkpoint on the Cimetta, above Locarno - where alpine dreams meet Mediterranean vibes!

Through a friend from Ticino, he discovered Ascona-Locarno and was instantly captivated by the rugged landscape, the warm hospitality, the charming rustici, and of course, the food. “In German-speaking Switzerland, competitions often focus on the competitive spirit. Here, it’s just as much about flying together and enjoying each other’s company afterwards.” Patrick is now deeply rooted in the region, both professionally and personally. His wife grew up here and he has owned a holiday home in the Bavona Valley for several years, regularly spending time there with his family. In spring, the region is an insider tip for anyone who wants to get up high as there are snow-free mountain tours, strong thermals and ideal conditions for long cross-country flights. One of his favourites is a 260-kilometre FAI triangle starting at Morena, via Centovalli, Domodossola, Bavona Valley, Leventina to Bellinzona – a route that requires planning, patience and skill.

Having a checkpoint of the 2025 Red Bull X-Alps on Cimetta was a real highlight for Patrick: he was warmly welcomed by many familiar faces. It felt like a home race – and one he rounded off with a strong eighth-place finish. Patrick places great value on team spirit and adaptability. His motto going into the race: “Of course I want to do well – but what matters most to me is sharing the experience with my crew.”
