The origins of the festival

Settimane Musicali Ascona (now known as classicAscona) was founded in 1946 by Ascona native Leon Ressiga Vacchini and pianist Alessandro Chasen with a vision: to make classical music accessible to all – in a setting that touches both heart and mind. What began with concerts in a dance hall has grown into one of the most important classical music festivals in Italian-speaking Switzerland.

Since 1968, the churches of Collegio Papio and San Francesco have provided the festival with its unique acoustic space. The elegant atmosphere, combined with outstanding acoustics, offers a world-class stage for international artists as well as emerging talents.

With a carefully curated programme of symphonic, chamber and solo concerts, the festival attracts music lovers from around the globe. Between 2013 and 2025, the artistic director has been internationally acclaimed pianist Francesco Piemontesi.

From 2026, the festival will move into the future under the new direction of Christoph Müller – guided by a spirit of innovation, openness and cultural depth.
